Mayor Dinkins Attends Basil A. Paterson Way Street Naming Ceremony

Harlem hosts Basil A. Paterson Way street co-naming & community tribute

This month the Village of Harlem will pay tribute to the significant lifework of the late Basil A. Paterson. He was a son of Harlem, WWII veteran, labor attorney, vice chairman of the Democratic National Committee, NY state senator, NYC deputy mayor, NYS secretary of state, Port Authority commissioner, committed public servant, community activist, and father of former NYS Gov. David A. Paterson.

Basil A. Paterson Way is located ​at the southeast corner of 135th Street/Malcolm X Blvd. in Harlem.​ ​Guest speakers included former Mayor David Dinkins, former U.S. Rep. Charles Rangel, former NYS Gov. David Paterson and Glenn Hunter of Harlem Cultural Archives.

The Basil A. Paterson Community Tribute happened on Saturday, Nov. 9, 2019 at the Metropolitan A.M.E. Church, 58 W. 135th Street, New York. Immediately following was the tribute program at the southeast corner of 135th Street/Malcolm X Blvd. and unveiling of the street sign, Basil A. Paterson Way.

Street co-naming and tribute attendees alongside a number of Paterson family members included Mayor David Dinkins, Hon. Charles Rangel, Hon. Keith Wright, City Councilman Bill Perkins, Dr. Hazel Dukes, George Gresham, president SEIU 1199, Assemblywoman Inez Dickens, Gov. David Paterson with his mother Portia, and grandsons Kyah, Alexander, Carter and Basil Paterson.
